‘Ever since I finished my own braces treatment as a teenager, I knew that I wanted to become an orthodontist! As a specialist orthodontist, it is incredibly rewarding to be able to provide both children and adults with the treatment they need to find confidence in their smile.’
Dr Alex completed his studies in Dentistry at the University of Sydney, graduating with Honours in 2007. After this, he worked as a general dentist treating medically complex patients at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown. Still excited to pursue orthodontics, he accepted a three year orthodontic training position at the University of Hong Kong, and became a specialist in 2012. During this time he also completed a Membership in Orthodontics at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, UK.
Since then he has had the privilege of working as an orthodontist in Singapore, Sydney and also regional NSW: in Tamworth and Shellharbour. This has exposed him to a wide range of patients with vastly different and unique orthodontic situations.
Being an orthodontist involves countless clinical hours creating smiles but it is equally important to keep up to date with the latest technology and research for my own professional development and for his patients. Dr Alex regularly attends local and international conferences to ensure that his knowledge is current and that he continues to provide state of the art treatment. When not in the clinic he enjoys spending time with his family, and when he gets a chance to: snowboarding, scuba diving and playing a bit of golf!
‘Being able to give a patient the gift of confidence to smile is something I look forward to doing each and every day.’
Dr Ashwin completed his dental studies at the University of Sydney and graduated with Honours after completing a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Science at UNSW. He worked in private practices in and around Sydney for seven years, giving him valuable experience in all aspects of dentistry, while also participating in volunteer programs providing dental treatment to underprivileged people in Fiji.
Whilst in general practice, he thoroughly enjoyed treating children and teenagers and seeing the positive changes in their confidence whilst they underwent their orthodontic treatment with their orthodontist. After undertaking a number of continuing education courses, he decided to pursue his interest in orthodontics by returning to university. The three year specialist orthodontic program at the University of Sydney provided him with the skills to provide orthodontic treatment to a broad spectrum of patients, with treatments ranging from early intervention to orthognathic surgery.
It is vitally important to stay abreast of best practice and new developments within the field of orthodontics, and as such he strives to attend as many conferences and educational events as possible both in person and virtually. He has been certified in the use of Invisalign, continuing to learn from the best in both disciplines in order to provide the best possible treatments to his patients.
While not at work, he loves to spend time with his wife and friends, ideally with good food involved! Fun fact: he also enjoys listening to and playing music and has been a part of a number of bands in and around Sydney! Sadly not nearly talented enough to quit the day job though...
