"During my specialist training, my passion for orthodontics only grew and I quickly began to realise how much I love my job and making people smile!'
Dr. Priyanka completed her dental studies at the University of Sydney. Prior to this she also had completed an undergraduate degree at the same university in Physiotherapy and worked on both the sports field as well as in the hospital sector. As much as she enjoyed being a Physiotherapist, she was looking for another challenge that would eventually lead her to her career in Dentistry.
After completing her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, she worked as a general dentist in private practice for four years where her interest in Orthodontics began. She enjoyed treating children and teenagers and witnessed many of her patients move through their orthodontic treatment whilst she worked collaboratively with the orthodontists in the multidisciplinary team. She saw the immense joy that orthodontic treatment provided them and decided to return to The University of Sydney to become a specialist orthodontist herself.
During her specialist training, she learnt to treat a variety of patients from children to adults, using braces and clear aligner therapy, as well as in the management of orthognathic surgery patients. From here, her passion for orthodontics only grew, and as she often says: 'I quickly began to realise how much I love my job and making people smile!'
When not in the clinic, she absolutely loves being outdoors. Her spare time is taken up by going to the gym, boxing, running, or 'simply basking in the sun!' She also loves to travel the world. Some of her favourite places that she's visited include Patagonia, Iceland, and Paris"
I was fortunate enough to study all three of my degrees at the University of Sydney. i started with a Bachelor of Pharmacy and then proceeded directly to a Bachelor of Dentistry degree which I completed with Honours. During this time I also had the opportunity to travel to rural Australian communities to work with Indigenous communities. I was also fortunate to be the recipient of a scholarship which allowed me to visit ho Chi Minh Dental School in Vietnam. for four weeks and learn about their dental school and procedures, as well as attend their Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic.
I had the opportunity to work in Sydney for several years as a general dentist before making the decision to return to university to complete a three year Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry in Specialty Orthodontics at the University of Sydney.
I decided to specialise in Orthodontics because I realised I loved working, particularly with teenagers, in an environment and specialty that boosts their self-esteem. Going to the orthodontist isn't stressful or frustrating, but enjoyable, especially when they see such a continuous improvement in their smile! My specialty program has equipped me to work with a spectrum of ages from teenagers to adults, from early orthodontic interventions orthognathic surgery with braces.
